This legend isn't just about a boy becoming a king. It's about determination, remembering the ones you love and looking at what others can do.
There are all of those clichés out there. "Quitters never win" "Quitters never prosper" "Quitting is not the answer" etc. I bet the people who made up those slogans were never in a situation where they felt like they would have to quit. It's tough being in that type of predicament it's like the walls are all closing in around you, it's hard to breath and at worst there is no way out. Sometimes quitting is the only form of release. Sometimes quitting is actually winning, leaving room for something that is supposed to be in your life to come in. For example quitting a job to pursue your life long dream. Sometimes we are meant to quit some things. Other times we aren't. In the case of Arthur he wasn't. He wasn't meant to quit coming to the sword in the stone. Pulling it out in the faces of his critics. That had to be rewarding for him! Time and time again these men said no you are not supposed to be king. This isn't right. They would have others come in and try but no avail. Every holiday Arthur showed up like he was told to and every time he pulled the sword from the stone. Until they gave up and let him have the crown.
The other side of this tale is the officials. These officials didn't have faith in this kid who passed all the trials that were set forth before him. How many times as adults have we looked down on children or even others in general because they didn't the criteria we had set for them? Sometimes people can be extremely judgmental and critical of others never bothering to stop and look to see that this person can actually do what they say they can do.
If King Arthur wasn't so patient, if he gave up and didn't bother then where would the kingdom of Camelot had been? It certainly wouldn't have been the place of such high legend. Also Arthur didn't forget about the people that had helped him. Sir Hector and his wife raised Arthur and supported him through the ordeal. What goes around comes around and Arthur repaid the man that raised him.
