A look at some alternatives for our youth to look at

look at the women pushed in the general public's direction there is not much to them but yet they are role models. There are some alternatives available.

I have always enjoyed hearing stories about the Goddess Artemis. She has been a namesake of sorts. It seems like in today's perceptions of the myths there is something lost. During the time of the Greeks and Romans these were important stories with characters that needed to be respected and idolized literally.

So often people talk about the bad influences of movie stars and sports figures. That these people set an image that is not healthy to society in general. Really that argument is valid. By being in the public eye the person has become an instant big brother/sister whether they like it or not. For anyone who has a little brother or sister they will know that it doesn't matter what they do or say. The younger sibling will look to that older sibling as an example as to how to live.

It's natural human behavior that we do this. However, there are some really bad examples out there especially when it comes to women. Look at how many women are pushed in the general public's collective face that are super thin, super dumb and super trampy. And people wonder why the youth of America are not as bright as they used to be? Why should a girl of about fourteen hope to accomplish anything or aim at being a strong human being when their role model thinks the most important thing in life is their next boyfriend or if their purse matches their shoes?

Having a good fashion sense is perfectly fine but there is so much more to life and to being a woman. That's where the goddesses from classic myth come in. These characters have much more depth than any given character on the "OC". Artemis didn't need a man to define her. When she felt violated by a man she didn't go cry in a corner. She turned the man into a stag and had his own dogs tare him apart. Now I am not saying that girls should go out and be hateful of men or do any violence against them. What I am saying is that it is ok for women to think and be strong.

There are other characters that are worth noting from many different mythologies. Christianity to Hinduism there are many women that have earned the right to be revered. People forget the important roles that women play in Christian mythology in both the old and new testament. No one is perfect, not even a Greek goddess but they do show a depth of character absent in pop culture. The point is that they are strong women who can think and act for themselves, having much better goals than the latest style and the thinnest figure.
