There are many women portrayed in Mythology. However there are some that stay with us for all time.
In Mythology there are quite a few women portrayed. Some are good others bad but all of them are compelling in their own way. However none are more compelling than that of the Goddess. Every mythology has a portrayal of the Goddess in one form or another. Each tugging at a bit of our humanity to make us want to look at them more.
The Mother Goddess is a mythological theme is one of the first forms of religion. The religion of our early ancestors was based around the feminine and her ability to carry and give birth. The act of giving birth was truly a magical act for these early people and we see the reflection of that aw in our myths. A prime example of this is the Goddess Gaea. In Greek mythology Gaea was the mother Goddess or otherwise known as Mother Earth. Her myths are mainly her either giving birth or protecting her children (and she had some children that only a mother could love!). She loved every child that she had and wanted them. According to her mythology she was one of the first Olympian Gods to appear. To the Greeks the first Gods were the Titans, then after the Titans came the Olympian Gods. She was a child of the Titans. She was there from the beginning like our mothers and through out time reflecting our earliest religious beliefs.
What article about compelling Goddesses would be anything if I did not include Aphrodite? Also known as Venus to the Romans. This Goddess, in my opinion, is both the most famous Goddess and the most compelling Goddess to our imagination and human condition. Venus was the Goddess of love. She was the subject of much artwork from painting to poetry. According to her myth she was the one who triggered the Trojan War by promising Paris the love of Helen of Sparta (later Helen of Troy) who was married to the Greek king of Sparta. Interestingly enough in most myths she chased after Ares the God of war. If we sit and ponder this a little bit, how interesting is it that Love and War sought each other. You can always find passion of some sort in the midst or war. She was a Bad Girl as well, in her stories causing trouble with many. People have been drawn to the love Goddess for many reasons her reputation of passion and love, the desire to have someone that is not yours and her reputation as being the ultimate Bad Girl.
These are just a few of the Goddesses that have broke through to the core of our human spirit through the years. There are many more that compel us and tug at our imaginations but those are stories for a different day.
